I’m so glad today was better. Sometimes it really helps when you feel powerless to take some action on something….anything. Your garage is like my basement–I have been working a year on cleaning out things at my house–and the basement is the last frontier–I have the upstairs fairly cleared out (for me! I am a clutter-y person, so that term is relative!) but the basement is daunting to tackle.

Congratulations, and doing this cleanup had the side benefit of unearthing some lovely memories–I loved the pictures you shared.

Oh Lily, this sucks! I have been in the same situation and put my life on hold for quite a while, until I saw that it wasn’t the way to go. Life is there to be lived, money or no money.
Now I know you are resourceful and able to find things to do together that don’t cost money and that being together with your loved ones should be top priority when going through the tough stuff. The advice from another commenter about going for an evening walk with your hubby is a good one – look after each other through this and you will be ok.
And things will get better, even if it takes a while. Best of luck with the job hunt and your education – a solution is bound to come up. Hang in there! Hugs.

“Life sucks sometimes. And it sucks right now.” kudos to you for not pretending- which might just be the most draining part of it all, isn’t it? I totally relate to you. The mister is in school full time, and boy is it taxing! Keeping the end goal and dream futures in mind helps, but there are some days where I just shrug and like you declare that life really sucks.

I’m a firm believer that marriages that can make it through college are set for smooth sailing down the road. :)

I think more of us are in a bit the same boat with you without admitting it… Sometimes I feel like “Life” is on hold because we have to live life and pay for it in the meantime. I love reading your blog, you ground me with your special wisdom, often I’m off in some mad cerebral, self absorbed world and you remind me what’s really important as you reflect on life and making. We could be twins! I am also 42, have returned to University full-time and am broke! I have 3 kids in University and my husband has returned as well. I have one 17 year old son who I still homeschool as best I can but he wants to go to University this year, too! I just got offered a job last week and have been praying every day that….they DON’T call me back to schedule my work shifts!!! It’s crazy but I took way too many classes and I just feel worn-out; how will I be able to work 12 hour shifts on the weekends as well? We need the money, so I will call them back tomorrow, but I am really hoping I can put them off (somehow!) until April when I will be taking a much lighter class load.
I know your pain and frustration right now. It’s hard when you have something that you really want to do and yet you still have to be the “mom” and sacrifice for the good of the family. This too shall pass (or so they tell me!). Take care of yourself and continue your crafting and blogging. We need more pictures of “real life” out there in blogland!

Lily,
I happened upon your blog and have just read your story. Life every so often sucks big time.
I decided, a number of years ago, to study midwifery at the age of 34 with four children under the age of 10. I was lucky though, as I was able to study full time for one year, which made the poverty part manageable. Although I do recall a lot of mince and sausages that year. Could you possibly finish off next year studying full time?
If you livei in Melbourne I would love to help out – midwife to future midwife.
